Top five money and energy-saving tips

1. Switch energy supplier: save up to £169

If you haven’t switched your energy supplier or tariff recently, there’s a good chance you could save money.

That’s because most fixed energy deals last for three years or less. If you don’t take action when they expire, you’ll automatically be moved on to your company’s standard, default or temporary tariff. This is unlikely to be its cheapest deal.

Our research reveals you could save up to £169 per year by switching from the priciest Big Six standard default tariff on the market to the cheapest available deal.

The savings used to be greater – closer to £300 – before the introduction of a price cap on standard and default energy deals from 1st January 2019. But don’t be put off switching; you could get better service at the same time.

Around 58% of you are on a standard or default tariff, according to energy regulator Ofgem, meaning there are big savings you could make on your energy bill.
